Florida Department of Education Rejects 54 Math Textbooks

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (Republican) has taken hard stance aligned with his party to aggressively push back against liberal cultural values, by rejecting books that push the “woke indoctrination.". Aligned with these views, The Florida Department of Education rejected 54 out of 134 math textbooks submitted by publishers.

The two main reason for rejections provided were:

A) These titles failed to meet Florida’s new learning standards or

B) Contained prohibited topics, such as references to critical race theory (CRT) [2]

DeSantis issued an executive order in 2019 that eliminated Common Core standards [1] as part of school curriculum requirements. Based on this order, the education department had notified publishers in June 2021 to align textbook content with state laws.  Publishers have the right to appeal the rejection and can revise book submissions.

Florida state Democrats on the other hand condemned the move and demanded the list of banned textbooks from the state.

[1] Common Core is a set of standards in reading, writing, and math adopted by states nationwide and are intended to ensure college readiness.

[2] Critical Race Theory (CRT) examines the role discrimination played in shaping American history and modern society.
